World champions South Africa delivered a powerful performance as they overpowered Australia 33-7 in the opening match of the Rugby Championship held in Brisbane on Saturday.

The Springboks showcased their dominance with a comprehensive display, leaving the Wallabies struggling to keep up. This blog post delves into the key moments and highlights of the match.

The first half belonged entirely to South Africa, who took a commanding 21-0 lead at half-time with three converted tries.

The Wallabies’ defensive line was breached again when lock Pieter-Steph Du Toit crossed over, further extending the Springboks’ advantage.

Australia, under new coach Joe Schmidt, entered the match with high hopes after three consecutive victories earlier in the year. However, they were quickly outclassed by the size and strength of the South African forwards.

Australia’s normally reliable scrum and line-out struggled, and their discipline faltered as they conceded 14 penalties and a crucial yellow card to Andrew Kellaway in the first half.

Though the Wallabies improved post-restart and had multiple scoring opportunities, the Springboks put the game beyond their reach with tries from Kwagga Smith and Kurt-Lee Arendse in quick succession.

Australia’s only consolation came late in the match when Hunter Paisami scored a try, converted by Tom Lynagh, as South Africa was temporarily reduced to 13 men following yellow cards to Malcolm Marx and Marco van Staden.
