The Democratic Alliance (DA) has reignited concerns about the involvement of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal.

The scandal, which resulted in the loss of R2 billion, has been a significant point of contention, with allegations of corruption and looting directed at the two leaders.

In 2018, the DA laid criminal charges against Malema and Shivambu following reports suggesting their involvement in the looting of the bank. Six years later, the DA remains dissatisfied with the lack of progress in the police investigations.

The party has accused the South African Police Service (SAPS) of dragging its feet and allowing these serious allegations to remain unaddressed.

According to the DA, the police should conduct its investigations without fear or favour. The party has expressed concerns that the silence from SAPS sends the wrong message in the fight against corruption and embezzlement.

As a result, the DA has taken further steps by writing to the chairperson of the police portfolio committee, Ian Cameron, requesting that he summons SAPS to explain the lack of progress in the investigations.

The urgency of the matter is underscored by a witness statement allegedly provided by Tshifhiwa Matodzi, a central figure in the VBS scandal.

The statement purportedly offers prima facie evidence of Malema and Shivambu’s involvement in a scheme to defraud VBS Bank and its clients. This evidence has fueled the DA’s call for immediate and transparent action from the authorities.
